Hey Guttenberg!! We’re looking for a few good hands…to help us pull off a successful RAGBRAI event….any and all volunteers are welcome. We need volunteers to help and we need offers of housing for the riders.
We have 2 huge weekends: Parking weekend and Arrival Weekend.
July 18-19 Parking Weekend: On parking/bus weekend, we will coordinate parking of hundreds of cars Friday and Saturday, camping in the park, housing requests matching requests with resident offers and the loading of charter buses and semis of luggage and bikes on Saturday morning.
July 26-27 Arrival Weekend: On arrival weekend, we work with city employees, vendors and entertainment to get everything set up and ready for the influx of thousands of riders, their families and bike clubs into Guttenberg-most between 9 a.m. - 2 p.m. During the Saturday “rush” we’ll need volunteers armed with maps and information to point riders toward showers, bike shipping etc., take photographs at the dip site and patrol trash barrels and porta potties to ensure they’re supplied. On Sunday, we’d love help to walk the town end-to-end doing any needed cleanup or tear down.
So – the jobs are large and small, some are just a few hours, some a day. The bottom line is we really need help – from your group, from individuals. Donna Hinzman is coordinating the volunteers – if you can spare some time to help pull off this huge effort, please email Donna at [email protected] or call 563-880-0110.
Jobs large and small to fill:
No experience is necessary – all volunteers will be briefed up on their responsibilities and all volunteers will receive a free t-shirt to wear so you can be easily spotted by riders and visitors.
To volunteer yourself or a group or to ask questions, email Donna Hinzman [email protected] or call 563-880-0110. Sign-up on our volunteer form at https://signup.com/go/EDnJqpo
We may get asked to arrange transportation (person/people/luggage) to an airport on Saturday July 26 after the ride concludes. The driver would be compensated by the rider(s). Contact Nancy McClellan at [email protected] to help.

Jobs large and small to fill:
- We need people to help with parking – to lay out the lots, to direct arriving vehicles, to collect and register drop-ins. These jobs start in early July and are done late morning on July 19.
- We need people to put up signs marking the riders route to the dip site, team bus route to their rendezvous locations, signs for showers, parking, This is a 1-2 day job and will probably be done between July 19-25.
- We need people on Friday, July 19 and Saturday, July 26 to patrol the trash/recycling bins, pulling out the full bags and putting clean ones in – and patrolling the porta potties ensure they are supplied.
- We need people to help set up the beverage gardens and “man” them on both weekends Friday, July 19 and Saturday, July 26 selling tickets and beverages.
- We need Guttenberg ambassadors with our brightly colored Volunteer RAGBRAI t-shirts out in the crowd and with map in hand to answer questions and point riders to parking, showers, luggage truck, bike shipping locations on Friday, July 19 and Saturday, July 26.
- We’ve been asked to have 5 people “a phone call away” on Saturday, July 26 to assist a group of disabled riders load equipment onto their truck.
- We need 1-2 ambassadors in the Guttenberg Welcome Center on Friday, July 18 and Saturday, July 26 for riders to pick up t-shirts the purchased ahead of the ride and answer questions for riders and visitors.
- We need 1 ambassador in the Marina Center on Saturday, July 26 where we’ll have the volunteer respite center.
- We need help on traffic control on Saturday, July 26 to get vendors and entertainment in, direct traffic around closed streets and get bikes, buses and people safely to where they want to go.
- We need residents to tell us – if they have curb space and are willing to let their yard be used as a team gathering spot, if you have an outside outlet to plug their RV into, if you have a shower they can use, if you have space on the couch or floor where they can sleep in air conditioned comfort one more night. Some teams just want a yard they can lounge in – we have lots of them. There is a form on the website to gather resident offers and rider requests. See our Forms page.
- We need people to be at the south boat marina Saturday, July 26 to take photos of the riders – we’ll use their cameras to take their picture and give the camera back to them.
- We need a few people or a group to help with tear down and cleanup in all the areas of Guttenberg on Sunday morning, July 27.
No experience is necessary – all volunteers will be briefed up on their responsibilities and all volunteers will receive a free t-shirt to wear so you can be easily spotted by riders and visitors.
