Greetings from the Mayor of Guttenberg:
Our community welcomes riders to Guttenberg for the sixth time in the history of RAGBRAI. We consider it an honor to host riders again to our city, truly one of America’s most beautiful places. As Mayor, I believe I speak for our residents when I say that Guttenberg possesses natural beauty, but this is also backed up by Forbes Magazine that listed it as “one of the prettiest towns in America.” Bike riders will be entering Guttenberg from the west on the Garber Road (C7X), but no matter which way you enter our community, you will be awestruck by its impressive scenic beauty. Our residents believe that Guttenberg has a strong future. Bordered by limestone bluffs and the beautiful Mississippi River, Guttenberg is a scenic, safe and vibrant community. Residents and visitors are invited to enjoy our recreational activities, riverfront parks and historic downtown district. We are proud of our quality healthcare, schools, churches, thriving businesses and friendly people — they all contribute to a welcoming environment. Guttenberg creates opportunities for all generations. Our volunteer RAGBRAI committee has been busy making preparations to make your visit pleasant and memorable. The dip site for riders, as well as the entertainment center, will be in the area of the South Marina and Visitor Center. The Mississippi River provides Guttenberg the setting for beautiful riverside parks with picnic tables, benches and shelters, a two-mile river walk, the Lockmaster’s House Heritage Museum, Lock & Dam No. 10 with best observation area on the Upper Mississippi River, Iowa DNR Fish Aquarium and Hatchery and a wide variety of recreational activities from boating to fishing, hunting, golfing and more. As you ride down River Park Drive, you will find yourself in the historic business district with its shops, restaurants, and lodgings. There are many other interesting stops, including the Guttenberg Public Library, which houses a replica of the first Gutenberg Bible. We want to thank you for coming to our community and hope you will return many times to our historic river town. We like to think of it as a great place to live, work and play. We invite you to return next year for annual events here, including an awesome car cruise every September and later the same month the popular annual Germanfest celebration of our German Heritage. Check the city website for more about our city: www.cityofguttenberg.gov and www.guttenbergiowa.net for what is happening in the area. Fred Schaub, Mayor of Guttenberg |
