Greetings from the Mayor of Guttenberg:
Guttenberg is again looking forward to RAGBRAI participants dipping their tires in the Mississippi River here in our new South Marina area.
Take your time – stop at the North Overlook as you come into town on Highway 52, to look down on our picturesque riverfront and historic town. Forbes Magazine called it “one of the prettiest towns in America…”
At the bottom of the hill you will be directed to follow the Great River Road and River Park Drive as you coast past our beautiful tree-lined Ingleside Park (saved from a cow pasture by a group of women over 100 years ago), our 2-mile river walk dotted with park benches and picnic tables and a public restroom.
Lock and Dam 10 offers a great observation area. The last remaining Lock Master’s Home is currently a museum and is located near the Lock & Dam. The Clayton Ridge Community School is located adjacent to the Lock & Dam. Across from the school you will discover a unique stone building that houses The Creativity Center and Shepherd Gallery. They will be providing entertainment and refreshments. Next you will find the Fish Hatchery and Aquarium.
Continuing along the Great River Road and River Park Drive, you will find yourself in the historic business district with its shops, restaurants and lodgings. At the intersection of Herder Street and River Park Drive, enjoy our mural of the historic Delta Queen. Go another block, on Schiller Street, two blocks off to the right is the Guttenberg Public Library where the replica of the first Gutenberg Bible is on display.
Continuing south, you will come to the new South Marina area where you will dip your tires, be entertained, and rest your weary bodies.
We want to thank you for coming and hope you will return again and again to our historic river town. We like to think of it as a great place to live, work and play. Fishing is great; boating, canoeing, kayaking and golfing too. Be sure to visit the Promiseland Winery, near the Ferry landing, as you head south on the Great River Road. In September we host an awesome Car Cruise; later in the month we celebrate our German Heritage. Check our website: www.guttenbergiowa.net to find out what is happening.
